We
use the Superkids Reading Program by Rowland Reading at Christ the
King. It is a comprehensive language arts program that
incorporates reading, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, grammar and
writing. Second grade is the final year of the four-year program
and reviews all skills taught at previous level to facilitate
mastery of those skills.
In
the first quarter, we will be reviewing digraphs, -le words and -ng
words in spelling and phonics. Reading will be focused on concepts
such as main ideas and supporting details, cause and effect, and
sequence of events. In vocabulary, we will review homonyms,
antonyms, idioms, figurative language, onomatopoeia and context
clues. Word choice, organization and autobiographies will be the
focus of writing. We will practice our reference skills by
using our knowledge of ABC order and dictionary skills. Finally,
grammar will address nouns, verbs, adjectives, complete sentences,
run-on sentences and punctuation.
